Lloret Castle: a tourist symbol of great scenic beauty

Located in the coastal town of Lloret de Mar, D’en Plaja Castle, also known as Lloret Castle, stands captivatingly on the rocks of Sa Caleta beach, defying the conventions of time and style. At first glance, this seaside building might appear to be a medieval relic that has withstood the centuries. However, it is a testament to 20th century architectural ingenuity, built between 1935 and 1940. Despite its medieval appearance, it is actually a privately owned modern construction.

This iconic building was promoted by the industrial entrepreneur Narcís Plaja Martí, a notable figure in the cookie industry in Santa Coloma de Farners, and designed by the architect Isidre Bosch. It represents an exceptional example of how contemporary architecture can harmonize with medieval aesthetics. From its materials to its structure, it has captured the attention of most visitors, becoming one of the most photographed elements of the city and a symbol of the collective and tourist imagination.

Architecture

The architecture pays homage to the Neo-Gothic style, a historically inspired period that flourished during the 19th century and evokes the grandeur of the Middle Ages. The Neo-Gothic elements that adorn the building include pointed arches, ornamental details, and, of course, the iconic towers with merlons reminiscent of medieval castles. Building materials, such as stone extracted from its own site, add authenticity to this modern recreation of the past. It is distributed over three rectangular floors and two circular towers, one taller and with a smaller diameter than the other. In 2021 it was declared a Cultural Asset of Local Interest and was also been included in the Inventory of Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.
